Every city has its sky. Above Los Angeles, the stars don't shine the same way they do above London or Tokyo — the latitude is different, the air is different, the moment is different. Capturing the exact sky over Los Angeles on a specific night isn't a generic poster; it's a portrait of a place and a time. Starry Memory makes that portrait, astronomically exact, for €3.99. Some moments deserve to be bottled. A summer evening embrace, a laugh that changed everything, a promise whispered low. The sky above those moments is the only thing that truly fixes them in the universe — every star, every planet, aligned in a way that will never repeat exactly. Starry Memory captures the precise trace.
What makes the sky over Los Angeles unique
The visible stars from Los Angeles (United States) depend on your exact latitude and the time of year. Constellations that grace the southern sky in Los Angeles may not be visible from northern Europe at all. The Milky Way's position rotates throughout the year — capturing the precise night you care about means seeing exactly what was overhead, no approximation. Our system uses the GPS coordinates of Los Angeles to render the sky as it actually appeared, with every star, planet, and constellation in its correct place.
🔭 Free 3D sky exploration for Los Angeles on the website
Alongside the printable poster, the website offers our free 3D sky explorer — an interactive planetarium showing exactly the sky over Los Angeles on your chosen date. Drag to rotate the celestial sphere, zoom into any constellation, recognise the bright named stars. It runs in any browser — no installation, no app, no purchase needed.
Best gifts for someone connected to Los Angeles
For a friend who got engaged at the Pacific coast, the sky over that exact night becomes a permanent reminder of the moment. For a child born in a Los Angeles hospital, their birth sky becomes a portrait of their first night on Earth. For a couple who met in Los Angeles, the sky of their first date is a gift more meaningful than any object. For someone moving away from Los Angeles, the sky over their old home becomes a piece of geography they can carry. Each use case shares one thing: the gift is rooted in the specific place AND the specific moment.
How precise is the Los Angeles star map?
Star positions are calculated from the HYG catalogue (119,614 entries in the HYG catalogue), projected to your geocoded coordinates of the selected place in Los Angeles. Planet positions use Astronomy Engine (VSOP87/NOVAS). The result can be checked against Stellarium, SkySafari, or any planetarium app. If you point the same software at Los Angeles's coordinates for your date, you'll see the same configuration. This is a documented astronomical method that can be compared in planetarium software; we just render it as a beautiful poster instead of raw data tables.
🔭 Free 3D Sky Exploration included
Our free 3D sky explorer, open to everyone on the website, is an interactive tool that lets you navigate the exact sky of your chosen date as if you were standing under the stars that night. Drag to change the angle, zoom into a specific constellation, identify every visible planet. We combine a printed poster with an immersive digital experience — not a static PDF, but a personalised planetarium for your moment.
Starry Memory vs other options: what's different
On the custom star map market, you mainly find three categories. All-physical services delivering a printed poster between $25 and $50, with a 3-10 day delay and expensive logistics passed on to the price. Marketplaces (Etsy) where each seller has their own quality, their own delay, with no guarantee of astronomical precision. Premium digital services charging $15-30 for a file, justifying it by careful design. Starry Memory positions itself elsewhere: €3.99 for the HD digital file, available to download on the site after payment validation, with a documented astronomical method and access to the 3D explorer included. For this occasion, this positioning means: no compromise on quality, price divided by 5 to 10.
The astronomical precision behind every chart
Every star position on your poster is computed from the HYG catalogue, which combines the three reference astronomical databases: Hipparcos (European Space Agency mission, 1989-1993), Yale Bright Star Catalogue, and Gliese Catalogue. Planetary positions are calculated with Astronomy Engine (VSOP87 and NOVAS models), an open-source library tested against JPL Horizons that documents an angular accuracy of about one arcminute. You can compare the main landmarks with Stellarium, SkySafari or Cartes du Ciel for the same date, time and place.
How to present your Starry Memory poster
Three approaches that work. (1) The surprise print: order the digital file at €3.99, print it at home on heavy paper or get it printed at a photo shop (any local print store, Walgreens, CVS, Walmart Photo) — A4, A3 or A2 sizes depending on the target wall. Slip it into a simple frame, wrap it. (2) The intro screen: send the digital file first by email with a personal message, then announce the print to come. Ideal for far-away recipients. (3) The double gift: first give an A4 printed version for the desk, then an A2 framed version for the living room — shows attention to duration. For this occasion, approach (1) is the most effective: maximum surprise effect, minimum cost.
