Every city has its sky. Above Edinburgh, the stars don't shine the same way they do above London or Tokyo — the latitude is different, the air is different, the moment is different. Capturing the exact sky over Edinburgh on a specific night isn't a generic poster; it's a portrait of a place and a time. Starry Memory makes that portrait, astronomically exact, for €3.99. Some moments deserve to be bottled. A summer evening embrace, a laugh that changed everything, a promise whispered low. The sky above those moments is the only thing that truly fixes them in the universe — every star, every planet, aligned in a way that will never repeat exactly. Starry Memory captures the precise trace.
What makes the sky over Edinburgh unique
The visible stars from Edinburgh (Scotland) depend on your exact latitude and the time of year. Constellations that grace the southern sky in Edinburgh may not be visible from northern Europe at all. The Milky Way's position rotates throughout the year — capturing the precise night you care about means seeing exactly what was overhead, no approximation. Our system uses the GPS coordinates of Edinburgh to render the sky as it actually appeared, with every star, planet, and constellation in its correct place.

Best gifts for someone connected to Edinburgh
For a friend who got engaged at the Castle, the sky over that exact night becomes a permanent reminder of the moment. For a child born in a Edinburgh hospital, their birth sky becomes a portrait of their first night on Earth. For a couple who met in Edinburgh, the sky of their first date is a gift more meaningful than any object. For someone moving away from Edinburgh, the sky over their old home becomes a piece of geography they can carry. Each use case shares one thing: the gift is rooted in the specific place AND the specific moment.
How precise is the Edinburgh star map?
Star positions are calculated from the HYG catalogue (119,614 entries in the HYG catalogue), projected to your geocoded coordinates of the selected place in Edinburgh. Planet positions use Astronomy Engine (VSOP87/NOVAS). The result can be checked against Stellarium, SkySafari, or any planetarium app. If you point the same software at Edinburgh's coordinates for your date, you'll see the same configuration. This is a documented astronomical method that can be compared in planetarium software; we just render it as a beautiful poster instead of raw data tables.
🔭 Free 3D Sky Exploration included
Our free 3D sky explorer, open to everyone on the website, is an interactive tool that lets you navigate the exact sky of your chosen date as if you were standing under the stars that night. Drag to change the angle, zoom into a specific constellation, identify every visible planet. We combine a printed poster with an immersive digital experience — not a static PDF, but a personalised planetarium for your moment.
How to present your Starry Memory poster
Three approaches that work. (1) The surprise print: order the digital file at €3.99, print it at home on heavy paper or get it printed at a photo shop (any local print store, Walgreens, CVS, Walmart Photo) — A4, A3 or A2 sizes depending on the target wall. Slip it into a simple frame, wrap it. (2) The intro screen: send the digital file first by email with a personal message, then announce the print to come. Ideal for far-away recipients. (3) The double gift: first give an A4 printed version for the desk, then an A2 framed version for the living room — shows attention to duration. For this occasion, approach (1) is the most effective: maximum surprise effect, minimum cost.
Who gifts a Starry Memory poster — and for what
Occasions fall into three main families. First, family celebrations: birth, baptism, wedding anniversary, parent's birthday — the goal is to capture a moment the whole family shares. Second, couples: the sky of the first date, of moving in together, of the engagement, of the honeymoon. The poster becomes a landmark in the relationship's timeline. Third, personal attentions — for a friend getting married, a colleague retiring, a child graduating. This page covers exactly this type of attention: a gift that goes beyond the object to become a signal of genuine care.
Why this poster isn't like the others
A regular poster lives in a bedroom for a few months before ending up in a cupboard. A Starry Memory poster lives in the story. Every time a visitor asks 'what's that?', the owner tells the story behind the chosen sky — the date, the place, why that night matters. The poster becomes the trigger for a thousand conversations, over ten, twenty, thirty years. That's what sets it apart from a mere decorative object: it carries a personal narrative that never wears thin. Our service at €3.99 makes this possibility accessible to everyone — without compromising on astronomical precision or the quality of the file delivered.
