Every city has its sky. Above Chicago, the stars don't shine the same way they do above London or Tokyo — the latitude is different, the air is different, the moment is different. Capturing the exact sky over Chicago on a specific night isn't a generic poster; it's a portrait of a place and a time. Starry Memory makes that portrait, astronomically exact, for €3.99. Some moments deserve to be bottled. A summer evening embrace, a laugh that changed everything, a promise whispered low. The sky above those moments is the only thing that truly fixes them in the universe — every star, every planet, aligned in a way that will never repeat exactly. Starry Memory captures the precise trace.
What makes the sky over Chicago unique
The visible stars from Chicago (United States) depend on your exact latitude and the time of year. Constellations that grace the southern sky in Chicago may not be visible from northern Europe at all. The Milky Way's position rotates throughout the year — capturing the precise night you care about means seeing exactly what was overhead, no approximation. Our system uses the GPS coordinates of Chicago to render the sky as it actually appeared, with every star, planet, and constellation in its correct place.

Best gifts for someone connected to Chicago
For a friend who got engaged at the Lake Michigan shore, the sky over that exact night becomes a permanent reminder of the moment. For a child born in a Chicago hospital, their birth sky becomes a portrait of their first night on Earth. For a couple who met in Chicago, the sky of their first date is a gift more meaningful than any object. For someone moving away from Chicago, the sky over their old home becomes a piece of geography they can carry. Each use case shares one thing: the gift is rooted in the specific place AND the specific moment.
How precise is the Chicago star map?
Star positions are calculated from the HYG catalogue (119,614 entries in the HYG catalogue), projected to your geocoded coordinates of the selected place in Chicago. Planet positions use Astronomy Engine (VSOP87/NOVAS). The result can be checked against Stellarium, SkySafari, or any planetarium app. If you point the same software at Chicago's coordinates for your date, you'll see the same configuration. This is a documented astronomical method that can be compared in planetarium software; we just render it as a beautiful poster instead of raw data tables.
🔭 Free 3D Sky Exploration included
Our free 3D sky explorer, open to everyone on the website, is an interactive tool that lets you navigate the exact sky of your chosen date as if you were standing under the stars that night. Drag to change the angle, zoom into a specific constellation, identify every visible planet. We combine a printed poster with an immersive digital experience — not a static PDF, but a personalised planetarium for your moment.
Who gifts a Starry Memory poster — and for what
Occasions fall into three main families. First, family celebrations: birth, baptism, wedding anniversary, parent's birthday — the goal is to capture a moment the whole family shares. Second, couples: the sky of the first date, of moving in together, of the engagement, of the honeymoon. The poster becomes a landmark in the relationship's timeline. Third, personal attentions — for a friend getting married, a colleague retiring, a child graduating. This page covers exactly this type of attention: a gift that goes beyond the object to become a signal of genuine care.
Printing & sizing: everything you need to know
The PNG measures 4960 × 7016 pixels. This provides about 300 pixels per inch at A2 (42 × 59.4 cm). At 70 × 100 cm, the density is about 178–180 pixels per inch; the proportions differ slightly, so choose margins or cropping. For a large print, check the result and settings with your printer. Enlarging the file does not add detail. For this occasion, here are our size recommendations: A4 (8.3 × 11.7 in) for a desk or small shelf; A3 (11.7 × 16.5 in) for a standard bedroom wall; A2 for a main living room; A1 for an accent wall in a high-ceiling space. On paper: 170 gsm for everyday use, 250 gsm for gallery look, matte or semi-gloss depending on the room's lighting. Online print shops typically charge between $5 and $25 depending on size.
Starry Memory vs other options: what's different
On the custom star map market, you mainly find three categories. All-physical services delivering a printed poster between $25 and $50, with a 3-10 day delay and expensive logistics passed on to the price. Marketplaces (Etsy) where each seller has their own quality, their own delay, with no guarantee of astronomical precision. Premium digital services charging $15-30 for a file, justifying it by careful design. Starry Memory positions itself elsewhere: €3.99 for the HD digital file, available to download on the site after payment validation, with a documented astronomical method and access to the 3D explorer included. For this occasion, this positioning means: no compromise on quality, price divided by 5 to 10.
