Write down three memories: a moment that made you laugh, a quality you saw them demonstrate and an activity you would like to share. Choose the easiest one to express in two sentences. An impromptu walk in the rain will often be more personal than a generic message about turning thirty, forty or sixty. Only write the age if the person likes to celebrate it.
Choose a date and a tone that fit
The date of birth, that of the birthday celebrated this year and that of the memory recounted do not have the same meaning. Decide which one you want to keep and explain it in your accompanying note. For a friend, a touch of humor can work; for a colleague, keep the thanks simple and sincere. The name chosen is a dedication in a private registry, without changing the scientific name of the star.
Present the gift in a way they will enjoy
